10 Years

Still chills you to the bone, doesn't it?

I had been in grad school all of about 2 weeks and was on my way to a clinical practicum in Dallas when the radio announcer said a small plane had hit the WTC. It wasn't until I got to my destination and began therapy that we learned the truth. My supervisor at the time did not grasp the gravity of the situation and had us continue all morning with therapy as we alternated between our patients and the t.v. in the next room. A fellow student became increasingly upset as she waited to hear from her brother who worked in one of the towers. Thankfully she heard from him later that morning. He was one of the lucky ones who got out in time.

I have been watching the PBS special "Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero" and it's pretty amazing what they're doing down there and what has already been accomplished. Some of the stories of this day 10 years ago that are just now coming out and are included in this documentary are pretty incredible as well.

Where were you 10 years ago?

I was still snoozing that Tuesday morning, up the ladder on the "shelf," when my mom called and told me something about planes flying into the WTC. I climbed down, turned on the TV, and am pretty sure I watched all day. I remember watching Katie Couric and she was talking to someone in the Pentagon about the NYC situation, when the plane hit that building live. Just so surreal.

Working at hospital. Pre-surgical ultrasound-guided needle loc of breast mass. Knew a plane had hit the trade center as we started procedure, small plane?, did not know. Watched with horror with my patient and her husband the towers fall as we waited for surgery transport. I will never forget.

I had the TV on in our bedroom and had just gone out to fix gramps breakfast. When I got back I wondered how he had changed the station. A hospice nurse came in for his bath, and the 3 of us watched in shock.
